I also found out that he was definitely at school in Strensall in 1911, but was excluded temporarily because of suspected measles. I do wonder if he was sent from Leeds to avoid catching one of the many diseases which carry off children. After all, his brother died young. His mother may have thought that he would have been healthier in the countryside in the care of his grandmother. | GROSSMAN Hyman (I0030621)

I have been in touch with Barry Seaton who lives in Leeds. My contact was initially about the Silbersteins as Liane Myerson (my and Louise's 2nd cousin) married David Silberstein. But the discussion widened to the Myerson family. Liane's great grandfather was Solomon Mierson/Myerson who's wife is given as Kate Frieze. However, Barry said Kate was the sister of Jane Matofski and their maiden name was Moses. So I did some digging.
Kate's surname on her civil and United Synagogue record is Frieze. She and Solomon married in Leeds in 1883.
The surname Kate gave for the birth records of her children are;
Frieze for daughter Dora in 1884
Moses for son Harris in 1885
Morris for daughter Etty in 1887
Moses for son Hyman in 1889
Moses for son Myer in 1892
Moses for birth of son Simon in 1895
Moses for daughter Jane in 1897
Moses for son Max in 1900
The surname given by Jane Matofski/Natofski for the birth records of her children are;
Mozezon for son Harris Jacob Matofski in 1874
Mozeson for son Ephraim Marks Natofski born in 1876. He died in 1878 age 1 so is not on any census record
Moseszon for daughter Rose Natofsky in 1878
Mosesson for daughter Mary in 1880 (nice Jewish name!)
I found the gravestones of both Jane and Kate. Both have Hebrew names 'bat Zvi' confirming they were sisters. Kate's father's name in the Leeds database is given as Harris. Jane's father in the database is given as Hirsh. Is Zvi appropriate for Harris and Hirsh?
Kate gave her address at marriage as 16 Cross Templar Street. But the Natofskis lived at 16 Templar Street in 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. In 1881 ( 2 years before Solomon and Kate married) there is a Marks Moses living with the Natofskis. He is listed as a boarder age 18. So is he perhaps Jane's younger brother?
There is an Isaac Freez and family at 15 Cross Templar Street (next door to the Natofskis)
In the 1911 census, the birthplace of Isaac Matofski is given as Marimpol. I think this is Mariampol. There is a Naturalisation record of a Levy Frieze (original name Leib Frezynski) with birth at Mariampol. So it is possible the Friezes and Matofski/Natofski families knew each other before moving to England.
So it looks very likely that Kate's surname wasn't Frieze but Moseson (or something like that)
FYI, there are two Isaac 'Metofskis' in the 1901 census; Isaac and Jane (listed as Fanny just this once) at 16 Cross Templar Street and Isaac and Fanny Motofski at 14 Sun Street. I wonder if they were related? | MOZESZON Jane (I0005155)

I vaguely remember, from 25+ years ago when I did some work with the Probation Service in Yorkshire, that there was a Judge Vivian Hurwitz Q.C., who tried criminal cases at York Crown Court, and wonder if this was his son. Possibly.
