THE REV. S. MANSON (Leeds). The death occurred last week, at the age of sixty-nine, of the Rev. Simon Manson, of Leeds, for over forty years, a Minister ot the New Briggate Synagogue. Mr. Manson, who had been in ill-health for some months, was a keen and active communal and public worker, who was
highly esteemed by his congregation and, indeed, by all with whom he came
in contact. From the earliest years of his ministry, the deceased took a
wholehearted interest in education, and spared no pains in his endeavours to secure Hebrew and religions instruction for the young. He was also for many years a member of the Leeds Jewish Board of Guardians, and acted for ten years as President of the Jewish Sick Aid Society. Mr. Manson was also actively associated with a number, of noa-Jewish institutions, particularly hospitals, in which he took the greatest interest and to which he rendered much practical support. One of the chief objects of his sympathy was the Leeds Workpeople's Hospital Fund; he acted as one of the two Hon. Secretaries of the Fund for twenty-six years, and was for over thirty years Chairman of its Central Ward Committee. The Leeds Hospital for Women and Children was another institution with
which he was intimately associated. The deceased was also the founder, and for seven years the Chairman of the Leeds kitchen for supplying Kosher food to hospital inmates. He was the first Jew to fill the Presidentship of the Friendly Societies' Medical Association, a position to which he was appointed in 1910. He leaves a widow, seven sons, and six daughters to mourn his loss.
The funeral at Gildersome Cemetery, on Wednesday of last week, was attended by representatives of all the srnagogues and communal Institutions in the city. Several non-Jewish friends of the deceased particularly those connected with the Leeds Medical Charities, were also present. The cortege halted at the New Briggate Synagogue, and, the coffin was taken inside the Synagogue and placed near the Ark. In a brief address the Rev, Dr. J. Abelson M.A., said that Mr. Manson had been an exceptionally devoted and enthusiastic worker. His activities extended far beyond the particular synagogue to which he was attached, and perhaps the best testimonial to his self-sacrificing labours consisted in the fact that he had, during his lifetime, possessed himself of the highest regard of so many of his Christian fellow-citizens. Mr. Manson's achievements in connection with the general charities of Leeds would long be remembered, and his passing away created a void which it willbe difficult to fill. |

The Jewish Chronicle |
THE LATE REV. S. MANSON. With great regret I read in THE JEWISH CHRONICLE the sad news that my dear friend, the Rev. Simon Manson, of Leeds, had left this world. He was a most devoted communal worker, always ready to
co-operate with me in every communal enterprise during the thirteen years of my stay at Leeds. At the work of the Kosher kitchen, in the hospitals and that of the Mikvah, he laboured with me most zealously, as also in the Talmud Torah. He possessed the heart of a real good Jew, always anxious with his whole soul to do a good uorn for everyone who
approached him and solicited his help. I express my deepest sympathy with the family of the deceased in particular, and the Leeds community in general. [Hebrew] From Rabbi JOEL LEIB HERZOG. |
