"By these means, we sent a letter to my father's cousin Daisy Landa in London, asking whether she could help us get to England. When we went back home after two weeks in hiding, we found her reply. She would provide the guarantee sum required for temporary immigrants, to ensure that no costs arose for the state. It was useful, she wrote, that my father had applied for entry permission for Palestine years ago as a possible way of leaving Germany at some point, as that would show that he didn't intend to stay in England. Due to the high guarantee sum, however, she regretted that she could only place the application on behalf of my father."
