Dr Alan Gilston Born Leeds, May 20, 1928. Died London, June 18, 2005, aged 77.
    THE FATHER of intensive-care
medicine, Dr Alan Gilston was the
anaesthetist in the first heart transplant in the UK in 1967.
    Graduating from Leeds University
in 1953, he worked in the North-East,
and moved to London in 1959 as a
    registrar at the Brompton Hospital,
specialising in cardiac and openheart surgery. He initiated mechanical ventilation for acute post-operative respiratory distress.
In 1962 he moved to the National
    Heart Hospital, where he became
    senior consultant anaesthetist from
1967 to 1990. He was visiting anaesthetist in Tel Aviv and at Jerusalem's
    Hadassah Hospital from 1966 to
    1967, and retired in 2001, aged 73.
He lectured worldwide and published extensively on intensive care
topics. He was a prolific contributor
to readers, letters columns, and initiated several professional bodies.
In 1970 he founded the Intensive Care Society. He launched the World
    Congress on Intensive and Critical
Care Medicine in London in 1974,
    serving as its secretary-general; and
the World Federation of Societies of
    Intensive and Critical Care Medicine
in the USA in 1981, serving as president from 1985 to 1989.
    He was founder-chairman in 1997
of the Retired Fellows Society of the
    Royal Society of Medicine, which
    now boasts 600 members.
His inventions included the tracheostomy T-piece, the sleeve on the
    Wallace cannula, and ventilator
    alarm bell. His domestic inventions,
    including special window-openers,
    earned nothing despite two patents.
Proud of his Jewish roots, Alan
Gilston was the grandson of Lithuanian-born Israel Gitlesohn, Bradford's first shochet. Having suffered
    extreme anti-Semitism in his youth,
he always told new acquaintances he
was a Jew. His interests and hobbies
included Judaica, archaeology, ancient technology and DIY.
He is survived by his wife of 39
years, Avelina, and two sons, David
    and Rafael.
